About Steve Wilson, Founder of Essential Performance

My journey in calibration began in 2004 with Japanese drag cars, where I discovered a passion for understanding how mechanical systems and electronic control strategies shape performance. In 2008, I mentored under a respected domestic tuning shop, progressing into high-horsepower street and drag applications. That experience led me to Akron, where I joined an engineering and race-team program focused on hot rods, muscle cars, and competitive drag racing builds.

During my time in Akron, our shop hosted EFI University courses, and I had the opportunity to participate and assist with those programs—further expanding my understanding of advanced engine management and motorsport calibration.

After returning to Columbus, I joined Honda Research & Development and operated a controlled chassis-dynamometer cell, working within OEM-level testing environments. While still at Honda, I launched Essential Performance, originally specializing in tuning and MIL-spec harness development. The company has since evolved into a premium calibration provider for European, exotic, and powersports platforms.

Over the years, I’ve worked with chassis, hub, engine, and motorcycle dynamometers—from enthusiast setups to full OEM facilities—which gives me a versatile and precise approach to every project. I’ve always been fascinated by how things work, and each new controller or strategy offers another opportunity to learn, refine, and push performance further.

Outside of work, I’m a husband and father, and time with my wife and son is the most meaningful part of my life.
